The Amulet Series by Kazu Kibuishi

After the tragic death of their father, Emily and Navin move with their mother to the home of her deceased great-grandfather, but the strange house proves to be dangerous. Before long, a sinister creature lures the kids´ mom through a door in the basement. Em and Navin, desperate not to lose her, follow her into an underground world inhabited by demons, robots, and talking animals.

Eventually, they enlist the help of a small mechanical rabbit named Miskit. Together with Miskit, they face the most terrifying monster of all, and Em finally has the chance to save someone she loves.

This post is about the whole series so far, but I have only put up the summary for book#1 because the others have spoilers!

I have been been hearing so much about this series for so long! I had never really thought much about it until I slowly introduced myself to the world of graphic novels!

On the back of book #1 there is a blurb from Jeff Smith, the creator of BONE. It says “Five – no, three pages into Amulet and you’ll be hooked.”. I quickly found this to be true as I stood in my local book store and read the first 3 pages. Hooked! I was hooked and immediately needed more!!

The only thing I regret about reading this series is that I read it too quickly!! I am done book #6- Escape From Lucien, and now I have to wait!!

Book 7 – Firelight comes out March 1st, 2016!! Waiting is hard!!!

All of the Amulet books are action packed adventures with unexpected turns of events!! You definitely don’t see a lot of the twists coming!!

The themes tend to be family, friendship, loyalty, trusting your instincts and believing in yourself! There is also a lot of picking yourself up after a fall and staying strong! Remembering what’s important!

With the growing popularity in graphic novels, I’m happy these books are out there! I know a lot of parents would rather their children read novels, but it is still reading! Especially for kids who don’t enjoy reading just yet. Also, they will be learning valuable lessons! There are some intricate plot lines and heavy concepts that your kids are going to grasp! While having fun doing it! I find that graphic novels are excellent for helping me out of my reading slumps!

Go ahead and devour Amulet! They won’t take long to read at all, but the stories and concepts will stay with you for quite a while!

If you’re not having fun,
You’re not reading the right books!
