Review: The Happy Head duology by Josh Silver

We are in an epidemic. An epidemic of unhappiness.

Friends, here is the good news: HappyHead has the answer.

When Seb is offered a place on a radical retreat designed to solve the national crisis of teenage unhappiness, he is determined to change how people see him and make his parents proud. But as he finds himself drawn to the enigmatic Finn, Seb starts to question the true nature of the challenges they must undergo. The deeper into the programme the boys get, the more disturbing the assessments become, until it’s clear there may be no escape…

Book 1: Happy Head

Oh my goodness! That ending! I am beyond happy that I have the next book lined up and ready to go. I gasped very loudly more than once. Josh Silver knows how to write an amazing ending!

This dystopian thriller was a game changer. Just relatable enough that you could see yourself attending Happy Head, yet the things that happen there are chilling. I’ve read a lot of dystopian books, but I dont believe any of them would resemble present day like this one did.

Book 2: Dead Happy

The experiment continues in the dark and disturbingly thrilling conclusion to the HappyHead duology where Seb will find the secret to escaping is more heart-wrenching than he ever imagined.

Seb was sure surviving the experimental health center of HappyHead would be enough to send him home. But now he joins the top ten contestants in the next stage of the testing, which will take place on a remote island, under the watchful eye of a mysterious couple.

Unsure if Finn is dead or alive, Seb reluctantly teams up with Eleanor again as the pair are forced to compete in a series of ever stranger trials to prove their connection and get their lives back. But Seb can’t stop thinking about Finn and how he may have been too much of a threat to the program.

Determined to find him, Seb’s search uncovers an even darker reality…and the only way to escape the island will be to expose the sinister truth behind HappyHead once and for all.

Wow. It’s giving Lord of the Flies meets survivor. Or maybe fear factor. The change of scenery makes a huge difference in the vibe of the book, and I really couldn’t tell you which one I liked more because I loved both! I felt like this one was a bit slower in pace, but heavier with the thrills and chills.  I didn’t expect to love these books the way I do. I’m so happy I had a chance to read them.

This duology was the perfect length for this story, and I’ll now read anything by Josh Silver. I don’t usually tell people what to do, but if you enjoy dystopian books, pick this one up!

Have you already read this one? What did you think? If you haven’t read it yet, is it going on your tbr?

Thank you to Penguin Teen Canada and Netgalley for the arc of Dead Happy 😘

Highly recommend! 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
