Review: While We’re Young by K. L. Walther

Grace, Isa, and Everett used to be an inseparable trio before their love lives became a tangled mess. For starters, Grace is secretly in love with Everett, who used to go out with Isa before breaking her heart in the infamous Freshman Year Fracture. And, oh yeah, no one knows that Isa has been hanging out with James, Grace’s brother—and if Grace finds out, it could ruin their friendship.

With graduation fast approaching, Grace decides an unsanctioned senior skip day in Philadelphia might be just what they need to fix things. All she has to do is convince Isa to help her kidnap Everett and outmaneuver James, who’s certain his sister is up to something.

In an epic day that includes racing up the famous Rocky steps, taste-testing Philly’s finest cheesesteaks, and even crashing a wedding, their secrets are bound to collide. But can their hearts withstand the wreckage?

I didn’t skip many days when I was in high school. I was the goodie-goodie. Your typical brown noser kid. You’re standard rule follower. Maybe that’s why I find these stories so much fun to read!

This book truly was a gender swap reimagining of Ferris Bullers Day Off. It was different enough that it wasn’t predictable, but the vibes were there in full force.

I loved all of the settings. The wedding crashing scene fit perfectly and had me smiling from ear to ear. The characters were relatable in different ways and very likable.

The only problem I had was that Grace’s dog Rooney doesn’t like Everett?? Dogs are great judges of character!! For a minute there, I thought we were going to find out that Ev was not as great as we thought! Then I remembered who Rooney was in the movie. 🤣

Closed door implications of sex was a surprise to me. I’m not saying it didn’t fit in the story, I’m just saying it was kind of unexpected. The hat throw scene was a perfect Ferris Buller moment.

All in all, a fun nostalgic read for me. Thank PenguinTeenCa and Netgalley for the ARC 😘
